Palio de Siena

The Palio di Siena is a historic and dangerous horse race held twice a year (July 2 and August 16) in Siena, Italy's Piazza del Campo, where the city's *contrade* (districts) compete for a *drappellone* (painted banner). This four-day medieval tradition culminates in a three-lap race around the square—ridden bareback—and sparks immense passion and rivalry among the districts.
